I was watching out my large window in the living room the other day. I have a variety of bird feeders...regular seeds, seedy-suet, regular suet, and a finch feeder. Critters are so amazingly fun to watch!
There was this little black squirrel chowing down on some leftover seedy-suet I had dropped on the ground when I re-filled the container. He was heartily eating! A brownish gray squirrel approached for some nibbles. Blackie wouldn't have it! He lunged and brown-gray and they went running around the yard and up a tree. As I do, I was "talking" them as they chased.
Right in front of me was a beautiful harry woodpecker eating on the regular suet. An ugly bird came along thinking it could dine. Harry poked him HARD in the chest. Of course I giggled and mentally cheered on the Harry. Ugly bird did not give up easily. He tried again for the suet. Harry went at him with both wings. I snickered! This was much better entertainment than social media or television.
A bit later a Pileated wood pecker flew in and landed on the suet. Oh he was magnificent to observe. He ate for a while. Then he flew to a tree nearby where I noticed his friend, another pileated. They dined together on the tree. I looked up and saw a third! This was all such a cool scene! Then the three of them flew to a nearby telephone pole and hung out for a bit.
Critters, as Ellie Mae Clampet of the Beverly Hillbillies used to call them...I so enjoy critters! As I have said before I create stories with the birds and squirrels who come to my yard and feeders. They are such fun! I wished I had had a camera handy to video the action.
(Laughing) okay I know this isn't what you intend to read when you read me here in Popcorn & Chocolate but I wanted to write it down somewhere so I wouldn't forget and figured this was the best place to do so.
I will write what is more expected...soonish! :)
