~Critters and the Snow White in Me~

So I talk to ducks at the lake...talk to crows in my yard...talk to squirrels...my husband just grins at me and believes I must be entertaining to our neighbors...

I have told you I "talk" animals and have a great imagination. Which reminds me, I need to set out my bird feeders as I took them in last night so the deer and squirrels wouldn't feast on them. Okay, I have returned, not that you noticed my departure...

Well, not only do I "talk" the animals...I talk TO the animals. We get a variety of critters at our suet and bird feeders. I have an easy access bird feeder for deer, squirrel and bird of a wide variety. I purchased a bird feeder that is NOT to be easy for squirrels to eat from. The deer, however, seem to know how to stick their tongues in the little bird head holes where the seeds are forcing my hand....to take both feeders in at night....

I looked out my window one day and saw a black squirrel dining at the easy access feeder. I keep the easy access for birds who are still learning to poke their heads in the holes of the other feeder and yes for some larger birds. I stepped out on my porch, blackie moved a little. I said, "well you're a brave thing!" He looked at me and jumped down. He sat looking at me for a bit so I began walking towards him. I said, "you need to leave and stop eating here." He listened all the way across the street as I escorted him. That day I didn't see him return.

Another time there was the red/brown squirrel feasting on the feeder. He is more stubborn. I walked up to him on the feeder...he jumped down...scurried to the nearby tree...climbed a few branches and looked at me...giving me eye contact. Well, I began talking to him and I guess using my hands as I talked (my husband told me later). I tried to reason with this guy as he sat staring at me.

I heard the crows outside another day. One was in our yard under the feeder cawing. I stood on my porch telling him to leave...he flew to a tree...I went out in the yard, looked up and saw several crows in the tops of our trees...there seemed to be "the boss" cawing down at me loudly as if to tell me to leave my own yard. So, being diplomatic with a bird, I looked up and said, "you all just need to leave!" The boss cawed loudly and they all flew off...to somewhere...not even across the street.

So perhaps I am an animal whisperer. My husband says I am entertaining for the neighbors as he told me I was under the tree, talking to the squirrel, moving my arms and hands around. That's okay. People can think what they want of me. What I know is that animals entertain me. I enjoy watching our variety of birds come to the different feeders. The finches feeding on the narrow feeder hanging from the tree are beautiful and fun to watch. Sometimes there is an alpha finch that shoos the others away. The nuthatch likes to show his authority there too.

Sure, to some I may seem like that loony lady who mutters to critters but the animals know better...they listen...oh sure, they are wild so they don't obey...they return to the feeders...maybe they return for the seeds and a bit of a chat with that crazy lady. Yeah, I doubt it too. I am sure they are simply there for the food. But I can pretend. I watch them through the window. I talk to them on the porch or in my yard. I threaten to pelt them with my air soft gun but they know I won't. It's not that I can't hit a target...I am not Annie Oakley.

So, I have let you into my mind somewhat once again. I grin as I sit here thinking that some of you really do think I am a loon. I am okay with that! Really! And some of you can relate to my ways with animals...so that makes me smile. Now, I could be crazy if I not only talked to them but sang to them as I escorted them away. When I was young, I loved musicals and as I played, I would break into song. Okay, you didn't need to know that? (laughs) I was just admitting to some of my ways. Animals only get my words!

I will continue gabbing to the animals as I tell them they don't belong on the bird feeder. It's part of who I am!

Below are 2 pictures of the feeders and suet feeders. You can sort of see the finch feeder. The anti-squirrel feeder as the little perches for birds. If something gets there that weighs too much, the feeder closes.
